BACKGROUND OF THE DISTRICT

Agona East district was carved out of the Agona municipality in the year 2007. The district with its capital at Agona Nsaba forms part of the new districts and municipalities created by former president     J. A Kufour. It was inaugurated on the 24th February 2008. It has a population of about 85,339; from the 2000 national population census, of which 49% are male and 51% are female. The district is in Central Region, located within Latitude 50 30', 50 50'N and Longitude 00 35' and 00 55'W. The district has a total land size of 667 Square Kilometers. It the following neighbours: Birim Central Municipal to the North and North West; West Akim Municipal to the North East; Agona West Municipal to the West; Awutu Senya District to the East; Gomoa East District to the South East.

 

STATUS OF LITERACY CLASSES

Even though there's been multiplicity of challenges confronting the district as new one, there are some success stories. Three batch 16 classes, nine batch 17 classes and two batch 17 model classes. The table below shows the status of literacy classes in the district.

ROLE OF COMMUNITIES

Communities' role with regards the organization of various classes has been in the area of community entries where chiefs, opinion leaders and churches have played significant roles to ensure the smooth running the programme .

 

 

DISTRICT PARTNERS

Collaboration between the District Assembly and the department has been very cordial. The Assembly provided three office tables and six office chairs for the department to augment our work. The Assembly again on several occasions gave out vehicles to assist the department in the area of mobility.

 

SUPPORT SYSTEMS

It must be noted that Agona East district as a new district is yet to start utilizing the use of the support systems of radio stations and book boxes.
